I have a packet due for school on Nov 6 (40-60 pages of new creative work,) but I am all over the news and non-fiction lately. I’m writing a memoir about my career in automotive before I quit to maintain my love of cars and to attend grad school for an MFA. I honestly have no idea where to start, anyone got any ideas?
This week we saw “escalations” in Palestine and Israel, you can read what I wrote about it here and here, and also an opinion piece from NYT’s Thomas L. Friedman “Israel Is About To Make A Terrible Mistake.”
Right now I’m reading The Cult of Smart by snarky
. The reason I’m reading it is because someone on the the internet somewhere I don’t even remember said “everyone should read this book,” and I thought, I am everyone! He argues that Americans value of a person based on their educational pedigree. He suggests our current education system is failing children (for reasons you don’t expect) and offers solutions to improve it. On an unexpectedly related note, Axios reported earlier this month that the best school system in the US is run by the Pentagon.DeBoerr has another book that was just released last month called “How The Elites Ate The Social Justice Movement,” which I've added to my TBR stack which is already teetering.
Jordan Peele just released an anthology of horror stories by Black authors called “Out There Screaming” just in time for spooky season. My library doesn’t have it yet, but it’s available on Libby app. Next week I’ll write a review of one special story that almost didn’t make it in the anthology.
Speaking of short stories by Black women, check out “Good Women” by Halle Hill, which is a good book.
Also published this month is a children’s book by my man, Bob Odenkirk, aka Saul Goodman, as in, ‘saal good, man (IYKYK) called “Zilot & Other Important Rhymes.” He recently starred in the show Lucky Hank, but I couldn’t watch it because it’s on the one streaming network I don’t have. It’s based on one of my favorite books that is hilarious called “Straight Man” by Richard Russo, who is part of the Old White Man From Maine Club with Stephen King, which makes them completely exempt from any criticism whatsoever.
The Philly Eagles play the Miami Dolphins tonight which I have absolutely no interest in at all, and thankfully it doesn’t start until 8:20PM so I’ll be in bed with my kid so my diehard Eagles husband can watch without disruption. If Tay-tay isn’t there I’m not sure it even counts as football, anyway. Who are you rooting for today?
And finally, in case you missed Mick Jagger’s cameo posing as a nun f**king the entire convent on SNL last night, please enjoy and have a great week ahead…
